How Does CBT Work?

A Structured, Evidence-Based Approach

CBT therapy is designed to help you through cognitive restructuring and move away from unhelpful thoughts and behaviours based on your individual needs. When working with one of our psychologists using CBT, they may:
favicon
Help you identify the negative thoughts that are impacting you.
favicon
Recognise any unhelpful behaviours caused by these thoughts.
favicon
Challenge your negative or unhelpful thoughts.
favicon
Create coping strategies to promote healthier ways of thinking.
Your psychologist may also use other evidence-based treatments to assist with your treatment, many of which are extensions of CBT.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

ACT helps you accept your emotions and thoughts as a response to your past experiences. Your psychologist enables you to commit to making changes aligned with your goals and values. ACT is commonly used to help clients with chronic pain, stress management and emotional distress.

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy is a form of therapy that uses aspects of CBT to help individuals identify deep-rooted negative thought patterns. Your psychologist will work with you to understand the psychological structures causing these negative thoughts.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

DBT is based on CBT, helping people accept their experiences, analyse their behaviours, and provide them with new skills to improve their mental well-being and build stronger relationships.

FAQs

Does CBT Work for Everyone?

CBT therapy is a popular form of therapy and is known to be highly effective, but no therapy can work for everyone. At The Anxiety Clinic, we shape our treatment based on your needs. We are always receptive to your feedback and adapt your treatment whenever needed.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

At The Anxiety Clinic, we specialise in short-term solutions-focused therapy. However, the number of therapy sessions depends on your history, concerns, and goals for treatment. You may find that 3-6 sessions are suitable to discuss challenges and form concrete strategies.

Others may need around 10-15 sessions or more to create significant change while working through complex mental health concerns.

Is CBT Covered by Medicare or Insurance?

We can offer Medicare rebates for clients with a Mental Health Care Plan from their GP. If you’d like to access therapy without a Mental Health Care Plan, you may be able to receive financial assistance from your private health insurance depending on the type of plan you have.
