Bipolar disorder is a complex mental health condition that reportedly affects 2.9% of Australians. It’s a serious condition that can impact a person’s thought patterns, energy levels, relationships and quality of life, especially when left untreated.

For those outside of Sydney, we also offer telehealth appointments for you to access our treatment options from anywhere in Australia.

What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is more than just having an irritable mood. It can severely impact daily life through extreme highs and lows that can last for days, weeks, or even months at a time.

The condition is often categorised into two different types of bipolar disorder, Bipolar I and Bipolar II. Both types centre around mood episodes and how they are experienced.

Someone with Bipolar I disorder will experience intense symptoms of mania that last typically a week or more. They could also experience a depressive episode, but the most common symptom is mania.

The other type, Bipolar II disorder, is when someone experiences major depressive episodes rather than highly manic episodes. Their bipolar disorder experience might still be filled with ups and downs, but they don’t have the same level of mania as Bipolar I. This is why Bipolar II is sometimes misdiagnosed as major depression.
